An interactive alarm clock that wakes you up with all your senses
Everybody sleeps. But not everybody wakes up as easily as the fall asleep.
During our survey we found out that a lot of people, especially singles in the age between 20 and 30 feel exactly this way. However, we wanted to find a way to make this normally rather unpleasant experience into something enjoyable.
Our survey as well as our cultural probes revealed that factors like good weather, music, as well as other sensations like the smell of warm bread or freshly cut grass make getting up much easier.
Probably the most important factor, however, is the the thrill of anticipation of an upcoming event.
We wanted to use this thrill, combined with visual, auditory and olfactory sensations to make getting up something to look forward to.
Our alarm clock collects data from the weather and the calendar app of ones smartphone and evaluates it. According to this data the sensations are created to be suitable to upcoming events.
After adding an event to the calendar app and rating it from 1 to 3 the best rated event is simulated through sounds, smells, as well as an artificial sunrise. This way, every morning is a new surprise and a preparation for the most positive event of the day or the upcoming future.
This concept is the result of a six weeks Interaction Design Process course by the Department Interaction Design at the Zurich University of the Arts.
